Blake Snell, celebrity pitcher of the Tampa Bay Rays, is setting his foot down: No pay, no play.
The Young Award winner said during a Twitch broadcast Wednesday he wouldn't return to play baseball amid the coronavirus pandemic unless the money's worthwhile .
"I'm not playing unless i buy mine," said Snell. "That's just the way it's on behalf of me . Like, I'm sorry you guys think differently, but the danger is much ... higher and therefore the amount of cash I'm making is much lower. Why would i feel about doing that?"
The comments come as rumors swirl a few plan approved by MLB owners that might halve the quantity of cash players would bring the season -- during a 50-50 revenue split with owners, ESPN reported.
Snell, 27, was scheduled to form $7 million this season alone. Though some have said players should play for the love of the sport , Snell disagreed, saying the danger was too high for everybody on the sector .
"You all gotta understand. Cause you all are getting to be like, 'Blake, play for the love of the sport -- what is wrong with you? the cash shouldn't be a thing.' Bro. i'm risking my life," he said.
"And then get on lockdown, not around my family, not round the people i really like , and getting paid way the hell less," he continued. "And then the danger of injury runs whenever I tread on the sector . So it's just, just not worthwhile . It's not. i really like baseball to death, it's just not worthwhile ."
In text messages to the Tampa Bay Times, Snell defended his comments, though he said he understood that some may perceive his ideas as greedy.
"I mean, honestly, it's just scary to risk my life to urge COVID-19 also as not knowing and spreading it to others," he told the days . "I just want everyone to be healthy and obtain back to our normal lives, 'cause i do know I miss mine!"
He also called attempts by MLB owners to scale back player salaries "frustrating" because players have more risk, he said.
